Sculpture and design of the Vikings. Viking
artists are known for woodcarving and
metalwork and for an intricate interlacing
ornament similar to that found in Celtic art.
The burial ship from Oseberg (University
Museum, Oslo) is an early example. The dragon
is a recurring motif. After the conversion to
Christianity in the 10th century, the
traditional Viking ornament continued: for
example, carvings on the wooden stave
churches of Norway, in Borgund and Urnes.
Viking art was gradually absorbed into the
Romanesque style.
